Trapeze
an unofficial definitionWhat is Trapeze?
NAME(S): Trapeze, Dance Trapeze
TYPE: Hard apparatus, bar apparatus
MATERIALS: Short steel bar fixed between two long ropes
Trapeze is separated into two different forms in the circus and aerial world - Flying Trapeze and Dance Trapeze. Flying Trapeze is done extremely high up off the ground and consists of partner based swings, flips and catches, with a safety net underneath. Dance Trapeze is done on a similar looking apparatus much closer the the ground and blends circus technique with dance, theatre, and expressive movement. While Trapeze itself has a long history in circus, the dance type form you see today (and we offer at Aerial Academy) is a relatively recent development.
origins & History
Trapeze has a long circus history. It initially evolved in three different forms, Flying Trapeze, Static Trapeze and Swinging Trapeze, focusing soley on spectacle, strength, precision and timing.
In the 1970s–1990s, circus began to change. A movement known as “contemporary circus” emerged, particularly in Europe and Trapeze artists began experimenting with slower, more expressive styles, moving away from purely trick-based acts. Artists brought the trapeze lower and started using single-point rigging (instead of two static ropes) so they could incorporate spin and time on and off the floor. Slowly there became more of a focus on creating beautiful shapes and incorporating dance choreography which evolved into what we now know as Dance Trapeze.
