Hammock is the youngest of the main aerial disciplines…but perhaps the oldest idea! It is made out of the same silk fabric as Aerial Silks but instead of using two long loose pieces of material, Hammock is one singular loop that sits above the ground. This apparatus actually has a dual use, in that it is both used for yoga (relaxation and stretching) as well as for dynamic artistry, drops, dance and circus style tricks. Here at Aerial Academy we use the Hammock for both our Aerial Yoga classes and our Hammock classes. The apparatus is the same but the application and style are different!
Most people find Hammock an excellent place to start their aerial journey as the loop of fabric is supportive, soft and easy to handle than Aerial Silks and less uncomfortable than a bar apparatus like Lyra/Aerial Hoop.
origins & History
Despite the fact that the Hammock as an idea has been in use for thousands of years, using the fabric Hammock as a circus tool to perform tricks on is actually only a very recent invention. It’s exact moment of invention is hazy but we know creation stems from two distinct crossover influences. The first came from an adaption of the Aerial Silks and the second was when it was begun to be used a tool to assist in and support in Yoga poses, a form of exercise that rose to popularity in 1990’s and early 2000’s.

Yes! Anyone can try Hammock, it is one of the best apparatuses to start with. We have a class for beginners that you can join anytime, no experience necessary. We also have an Mixed Level style class that caters for everyone.
